The Review of Shakespeare’s Ugly Stik
Where it all began
In 1897 in Kalamazoo, Michigan William Shakespeare, Jr founded Shakespeare, (not the author). They have been the leading manufacturer of quality affordable fishing tackle since.
One problem that Shakespeare found with his existing reels was that the spool would keep on spinning after the bait/lure hit the water. This, in turn, would create a backlashing, or birds nest and would cause the reel to be restrung often. In 1939, Shakespeare invented a “backlash” brake called the Wondereel® and it was one of the most popular reels to hit the market.
Shakespeare introduces the Ugly Stik
The introduction of the Ugly Stik appeared in 1976 and was the first to incorporate the clear tip design and Howald Process construction making it virtually indestructible.
For the Ladies- In 2007, Shakespeare partnered with the American Breast Cancer Foundation. During which time, they came out with a line specifically tailored to women. There were four different models such as Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Ladies combo, Ugly Stik Ladies Spinning combo, Ugly Stik LadyFish Spinning Combo, Ugly Stik Lady Camo Spinning combo.
With a variety to choose from you will surely win her heart over with the sport of fishing. Or maybe the special lady in your life that would love a new rod and reel to add to her collection.
GX2 Gets and Upgrade
During the summer of 2013, Shakespeare released the next generation of the Ugly Stik GX2. Just as the original Ugly Stik, the new GX2 has had many upgrades that will impress even the seasoned anglers. The ladies line included the Ugly Stik GX2 Ladies Spinning rod, Ugly Stik GX2 Ladies Casting rod, and Ugly Stik GX2 Ladies Ice Combo.
Availability- The Ugly Stik GX2 rods comes available in spinning, casting and fly rods with a low starting price of $39. This truly is an affordable way to have a variety of fishing rod options to add to your collection that won’t break the bank. For new anglers just getting started, Shakespear has rod & reel combos available in casting and spinning models for just a few dollars more.
Construction of the Rod
Rod Blank – If you are familiar with the Ugly Stik model, you will see that they still sport the clear tip design that’s been known for its durability & sensitivity.
This new generation of technology is called the “Ugly Tech™” the rod being integrated with a touch of graphite into the traditional fiberglass giving it a clean black matte finish.
The balance point has moved to the butt end of the rod, eliminating fatigue when fishing long days. There are those that said that the rod felt much better in their hands, it feels much lighter and is easier to cast.
I watched this guy try to break an Ugly Stik GX2 rod and it was hilarious of all the ways he tried to break it. Watch the video and see if he can break it.
One-Piece Guides – The guides are redesigned to be a single piece, stamped stainless steel eyelets making it extremely durable and almost impossible to destroy. Unlike before the guides had pop-out ceramic inserts that broke off much easier.
Durable Grip – The grip is made of an EVA material that is very comfortable to hold after many hours of casting and retrieving.
7 Year Warranty – Shakespeare backs their Ugly Stik GX2 with a 7-year warranty.
What people are saying
During my research about Shakespeare Ugly Rod, I found a few complaints about the rod breaking after so much time or use. Or that the reel bail snaps off. However, we don’t know what’s happening to them during construction or during transit that may falter. But one thing for sure is that if you purchase it through Amazon, their customer service takes care of any issues.
Is the GX2 right for you?
No matter what stage of the game you are in at this present moment, the Ugly Stik GX2 is a great rod, to begin with, or add to your arsenal of fishing gear. You can rest assured that if you loan out one of your rods to someone, you will know that it will hold its own.
With the multitude of models available in both the spinning and casting GX2 series, there’s sure to be a rod for any type of fishing situation you want to challenge.

Anyone at any level will benefit from the all-around performance of this rod without breaking their bank. With the dependability that comes with the Ugly Stik line, your sure to experience years of top performances.
Henry Shakespeare was the last family owner of this company, and he died in 1993. Prior to that, he had sold the company to Anthony Industries.
